Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)

If Benjamin Franklin had his way, the wild turkey would have been our national symbol. As it is, the wild turkey on San Juan Island is a bit of a curiosity. It was introduced to the island perhaps in the 1960s."Wild" is a misnomer because they are quite tame and their behavior is much like their barnyard relatives. These birds are most abundant in the area around British Camp on the island's west side. Photo by Stephen Fjelstad.
